Twentieth Century Fresco is a film adaptation of Sándor Weöres’s
poem, a dark allegory about humanity’s self-destructive desires
and a community struggling in the ruins of its own civilization. The
protagonist pulls a rusty shopping cart uphill, three children hud-
dled inside. The cart’s creaking blends with the ceaseless chirping
of crickets and insects – a tense, utopian world humming in the
background. The destination remains unknown—perhaps toward a
new world, or merely up an endless incline, burdened by the weight
of the past. Images, symbolism, and expressive rhythm translate
the poem into cinematic language.
