"The Life and Miracles of Saint Nicodemus of Tismana" by Liviu Bărbulescu is a documentary disguised as a humorous animation. Combining the colorful visual style of old Romanian naïve rural church painting with cut-out animation, it results in a highly atypical tragicomic documentary. It highlights the forgotten history of the Orthodox Church’s involvement in the enslavement of the Romani people in Romania. The film masquerades as a comedy about the unusual miracles of Saint Nicodemus, a 14th-century monk, including turning pork steak into fish, floating over the Danube on his staff, and cursing a village, only to later reveal the true legacy of Saint Nicodemus of Tismana.
