Dasa Raimanova's documentary film tells the story of Roksana. Roksana identifies as both Roma [Gypsy] and Polish [Gadji]. At the age of five, after being abandoned by her native Polish mother, her Roma father took care of her. Her childhood was a constant balancing act between a Roma settlement that favoured freedom and the strict rules of her grandfather’s traditional Polish household – today this conflict pushes her into an existential dilemma. Roksana is now in her mid-30s; single and childless. The true opposite of the expectations of her Roma family.
Employed as a teaching assistant, she works to keep Roma children in school, as more than half leave education before the age of sixteen in Poland. She could be the perfect bridge, but each culture wants her to reject the other. Roksana, however, desires to belong.
