AKE DIKHEA? is a festival of films by and with Romani people, which takes place every year in Berlin since 2017.

At AKE DIKHEA?, we are dedicated to bringing Romani cinema to the forefront and spotlighting systematic inequalities within the European film industry. Our festival serves as a platform for showcasing the diverse narratives of the Romani diaspora from around the globe, igniting critical discussions on representation, identity, and social justice.

Through a carefully curated selection of films, we strive to amplify marginalized voices, dismantle stereotypes, and celebrate the rich and multifaceted nature of Romani ethnicity and culture. More than just a film festival, we aim to cultivate meaningful dialogues and advocate for greater inclusivity and representation in the European film industry. In addition to film screenings, AKE DIKHEA? will feature panel discussions, masterclasses and performances.

As a self organised festival we are committed to providing a space where filmmakers, artists, activists, and audiences can converge to explore, critique, and celebrate storytelling. We serve as a vital platform for spotlighting intersectional narratives while fostering essential discussions on representation, identity, and social justice.

Film Selection

AKE DIKHEA? stands for a unique, participatory selection process: Thanks to our worldwide network of (Romani) filmmakers, we are able to discover topics, people and perspectives that would otherwise remain hidden or only have a local or national impact.

AVAZYA Network

What is AVAZYA Network?

The AVAZYA Film Professionals Network was launched during the 6th International Festival of Romani Film AKE DIKHEA? in 2022 and is run by the AKE DIKHEA? team based in Berlin, Germany. Its a continuously growing network with a goal to increase opportunities for Romani film professionals and advocate on a European level for policy change towards equity and inclusion of Romani film professionals within the international film market. AVAZYA means in Romani language VOICES which stands for the diversity and plurality of the storytelling of Romani people. The approach of AVAZYA is intersectional and multi-perspectival, that’s why also non-Romani filmmakers with diverse marginalized backgrounds are welcome to be members as well.

Why does AVAZYA exist?

Romani filmmakers, stories and perspectives have historically been excluded from the film industry. As a consequence, racist storytelling dominates the mainstream film and culture in all European countries, based on othering and a discourse of not belonging. AVAZYA was established in order to overcome this imbalance and the underrepresentation of Roma on the world-wide film market.

What do we do?

AVAZYA is a transparent network with a focus on community support, advocacy and knowledge exchange.

AVAZYA supports explicitly but not exclusively Romani filmmakers both on the level of further developing their professional skills and on the level of improving access to the European film market.

AVAZYA supports the film industry in portraying authentic and diverse Roma perspectives.

AVAZYA provides an international, inclusive and high-profile exchange on the topic of Antigypsyism in Europe, especially in the field of film. Antigypsyism itself as well as harmful, stereotypical film representations of Romani people are to be acknowledged as visible pan-European problems, and knowledge about them to be both deepened and disseminated.
